Born in Ikeda City, Osaka. He has received the Hasselblad International Photography Award, the German Photographers Society Award, the Asahi Prize, the Mainichi Art Award, and the Writer's Prize of the Photographic Society of Japan, among others. He is highly acclaimed not only in Japan but also abroad.
